Common Dolphins at Channel Islands Whale Watching

by Channel Islands Whale Watching

We set a course for the west south west today as we got underway.

It was my first day on the water since the wind blew this past week. I was so very happy to be underway and heading offshore.
Conditions were nice, with 10 miles of visibility. We looked near coastal for our north bounders, but the island kept calling.

I found myself venturing offshore to search the channel as there did not appear to be any signs of activity near shore. It had been sometime since we had made the crossing, and I sure was glad we did. There is a simple beauty, a sheer attraction to be near the island. Anacapa in the spring is just an incredible sight. Coreopsis is in bloom along with Indian Paintbrush and the island is starting to come alive with color.

Colonies of California Sea lions line the shores and bird schools are ever present as we make the transit. While the recent blow churned the water and cooled it down, it’s part of the natural cycle of island life. We are seeing more life now in the channel than we have in recent days. We see more signs of krill in the channel and that may bode well for in bound Humpbacks and Fins. Last week we had a few Blues in the east channel as well.

We found a Gray this afternoon, but the wind came up in a hurry challenging us make great observations as are customary. We chocked it up to nature and took in the weather that sometimes passes through the Santa Barbara Channel. This is part of it make up.

This is what keeps our island wild. This is what makes these islands so very special compared to any others up and down our coast. For here they have stood, for thousands of years…like an impenetrable fortress against the relentless elements. This is true unspoiled nature. Don’t miss out, our SeaFari season begins May 1 and continues through July 31. These trips focus on the wildlife in and around Channel Islands National Park and National Marine Sanctuary. We look forward to seeing you onboard.
