Channel Islands National Park Whale Watching Report 3-13-2013

by Frank Ursitti

The fog continued to cast its mysterious cloak upon the waters surrounding Channel Islands National Park and National Marine sanctuary today.
This made for difficult conditions for us to locate northbound migrators.
There have been reports of Orcas in the region, and todays conditions just added to the suspense we all felt as we headed offshore.
This is the time of year, the very part of each and every season where we encounter this top predator of the aquatic realm.
A pod of 17 Orcas were observed less than 48 hours ago making their way north.
Could this be the same pod we encountered last spring at the same time?
We have had more encounters than most this season and are eagerly awaiting our next.
In addition, there have been several Fin and Humpbacks in the region.
The forecast is for the conditions to improve and the fog to lift.
We can’t wait, as this is the time of year we live for.
See you onboard,

Capt. Frank
