Today was yet another day that reminds me of why I have spent a lifetime on the water.

When I review the days images, I am able to reach out and relive the moment and reminisce on these incredible encounters.

We broke loose of the coast today, even though we encountered 16 Grays yesterday, and headed out for deep water to see if anything has started to move through.

Looking for wildlife is much like looking for schools of pelagic fish. You look for conditions, signs, clues as to their whereabouts. When you are on the water daily, you notice patterns and changes, subtle differences that all lead to where wildlife will or will not occur.

We followed our instinct and the signs and encountered the second largest whale on our planet, the Fin.

This particular whale was tacking back and forth over about 1.5 miles feeding at depth.

The Fin is a difficult whale to observe at times, not being shy of an approach, nor wanting it…just kind of indifferent. This makes the species a little more difficult to track.

We observed from a distance as all 70 feet of sleek stealth rose to the surface to ventilate before sounding to the depths. We observed vast areas of feed at approximately 200 feet down suspended throughout the water column…likely what our animal was doing in the region.
We stayed with this magnificent mammal for over 45 minutes before we set our sights back towards the coast.

We likely will head out to the region tomorrow, and continue our quest to observe the best the Channel Islands have to offer.
