Gray Whale Breached Through the lens of Edward Howell

by Frank Ursitti

I had the pleasure last year of meeting an individual one morning walking the docks at our landing. He was capturing images of the mighty Blue Heron as it fished for sardines in the bait receivers.

He was the nicest man, soft spoken and ever so casual about his camera and what he was doing.

He captured a few images of my dog that day and emailed me that evening.

I was floored with the quality and also the way he captured the image. He saw my dog in a different perspective than I ever had, so much so I felt as if I was looking at my dog for the first time.

He put me on his list of people he forwards his images to, and quickly I found that I couldn’t wait to open his next email.

I reserved time each evening just to get lost in his work.

While much of his subject matter is common sights we encounter daily, they are all new and fresh through his lens.

Ed heads offshore with us daily now, and has captured more wildlife through his lens than I could ever have attempted. His eye for light and sense of wonder with even the most common of subjects makes every image a masterpiece.

I spent the afternoon pouring through hundreds of images and was just astounded how he sees the world we live in.

Bravo Ed…and thank you for your friendship.

Attached are a series of images where a Gray Whale Breached just off our bow.

This type of behavior is common this time of year, and as usual Ed was there to capture it.
