Humpbacks made their way back into the Channel Islands
by Frank UrsittiToday as luck would have it, the Humpbacks made their way back into our region. Of course I was not onboard, but am living vicariously through the lens of Edward Howell our onboard photographer and the stories by the crew.
This was one of those days where the whale chooses you, and you have no alternative but to lay too, drifting while the whale goes people watching. Our Humpback today came alongside as we drifted and seemed as curious with us as we were with him.
At one point exhibiting a bit of hang time with his head out of the water while we all just watched in awe. The afternoon trip was equally as engaging as we watched our whale lunge feed on a vast area of krill. These are the encounters that we strive to achieve.
These are the reasons we chose the path we chose with ecotourism. To encounter such a gentle giant exhibiting this type of behavior, one cannot come away from the experience without being touched to the very core. I was so happy for those onboard, yet at the same time disappointed I had missed the encounter.
One would think after a lifetime spent on the water that encounters like these were routine.but quite the contrary. I cannot wait to get back on the water and my opportunity to drift along as our whales go people watching.
